DIY bathroom fixer upper: Part 1

There comes a time when certain rooms in the house need some sprucing up and our small upstairs bathroom fit the bill.
Our eventual plan is a complete makeover with new tub, toilet, vanity, flooring and fixtures however we have other home improvement projects that are in progress such as interior painting and crown molding.
This phase of painting the ceilings and adding crown molding was taking place during the same time as the Bridal Shower preparations in late July. The light fixture still needs to be replaced, once we find one we like, so for now we are focussed on the bathroom.
Our bathroom updates include fresh paint and new fixtures as well so the first step was removing everything that was going to be replaced. On the top of the list was the removal of the DIY Medicine Cabinet the hubs made years ago when the kids were little. We needed more storage space so he made a wonderful built~in medicine cabinet. It was just what we needed at the time however we did not have a use for it anymore so he has removed it, patched the wall, textured and painted. Unfortunately I did not get a photo of it before he removed it but it was in the space above the new towel rack shown below.

The original towel system we had below the medicine cabinet featured four hooks, one for each of the kids. At the time this seemed like the best solution for their towels in such a small space and it worked well but it is time for something new. We are going to repurpose the hooks so those will be removed and saved for another project.
Just like our other bathrooms this one also had oak cabinets.
The oak doors were removed and the hubs made new cabinet doors and drawer fronts.
He painted the walls and the cabinet and also added base molding.
The doors and drawer fronts are now finished as well as a new pull~out shelf inside the cabinet.
The inside of the bathroom cabinet was dark so he painted the inside which brightened it up and then built a pull~out shelf for easier access to the supplies inside.
The bathroom is coming along, however, just like many of our projects, we ran into a snag. Our update plan includes replacing all of the gold fixtures with new brushed silver, including the tub/shower but that turned out to be a bigger project than we anticipated. In fact, it is somewhat major in my view, as we have discovered that to change the built-in tub/shower fixtures you need access to the pipes and the only way to get access in this case is through the office on the other side of the wall.  That entails removing the hubs built~in office desk and cutting a hole in the drywall to get to the pipes which will probably mean the entire office will need to be repainted once the drywall is repaired. Thankfully we are not expecting overnight guests anytime soon since the bathroom is now partially out of commission. Once we begin I will be back to post the next phase of our DIY bathroom fixer~upper project.

Happy Saturday!
