GOLF TEE Wedding Boutonnière

While helping with P&B’s wedding I got a wild idea! A wonderful, fun and easy idea for a wedding boutonnière. I know our boys do not have much interest in things like that but it is traditional so I figured if I kept it toned down the groom just might go for it.
So, it occurred to me, since he loves to play golf he might agree to a simple golf themed Boutonnière. Nothing flashy, just a modest DIY fern and burlap little pin for his lapel.
The groom is pretty easy going but I thought the best plan of action should be to check with the bride~to~be first and get her blessing and then ask the groom. She was on board and liked the idea so I moved ahead and asked the groom and he was fine with it too!
Unfortunately, by the time I got the green light for my boutonnière, my sample had dried up and curled tight around the tees leaving red fern dust all over so I had to make a new one. This time I used younger fern leaves that did not have any spores on the bottom side and pressed them flat while they dried. They turned out perfect but were much more fragile than the more mature leaves with the spores. To remedy that I bought one artificial fern sprig on sale at Joanns for $1 and cut a couple leaves down to size to stabilize the delicate dried fern leaves. This time I also added a sprig of baby’s breath and used a drop or two of hot glue at the base to be sure it all held together. I wasn’t taking any chances this time since we were so close to the wedding day by now.
It was the perfect boutonnière for our golf enthusiast groom and just what his lapel needed! I love when a plan comes together :)

Happy Last Day of August!

P&B Wedding Day Dessert :: from farm to table

Why not start with dessert?! Our Favorite Middle Son was married a week ago and there is a lot to share so just for fun we will begin with the sweets.
These homemade individual cobblers were a special request for their Backyard Wedding Reception. They are one of the grooms favorite desserts so P&B asked if I would mind making my Blackberry Cobbler, { AKA: Wedding LOVE Cobbler } which is what they named it, for their reception dessert in lieu of cake. Of course the answer was YES so they went to Hoffman Farmswhich happens to be our favorite farm for U-pick, and handpicked all the berries for the cobblers.
The day before the wedding I made 60 individual blackberry cobblers using our family’s favorite recipe and made in two separate batches.
These disposable terra cotta tins with lids were just the right size, color and perfect for serving.
The cobblers were arranged on an old desk using terra cotta flower pots as a cake stand. I sewed a simple tablerunner to match the wedding colors using some fabric given to me by my mother, which  of course made it extra special. Above the table I strung a banner of assorted black and white photos of the love birds.
Mr. Wonderful cut a board to fit in one of the drawers to make extra serving room for more cobblers.
The little cobblers turned out great.
Due to the warm weather and to keep things simple we used canned whipped cream and let everyone add that themselves as desired.
The Wedding LOVE Cobblers were a hit and a perfect ending to a perfect day!

Happy Tuesday!

Part 2 :: Road Trip to Alaska

It is easy to get behind on the blog posts when so much is going on so I am switching gears today  and sharing more pictures of our Alaska adventure
Our caravan road trip to Alaska in June was amazing to say the least. It was several days of long hours of driving but was a ton of fun and definitely not boring. In fact, when traveling in a caravan with adult kids and another parent it is even more fun. And, when it comes to the scenery along the way it is hard to describe how breath taking the view was at all times in every direction.
On June 14th we grabbed breakfast at the hotel in Fort Nelson at 7:45am, stopped to get coffees and then hit the road at 8:30am after a quick stop to fill up the truck and two cars with gas. As we were leaving town we passed a digital sign with a WARNING: Bison on Alaska H, however, we did not see any bison until 12:20. By that time it caught us a bit by surprise. We could see a couple of cars ahead slowing down to look at some of them on the side of the road and take pictures however they scared them away before we got close enough to get a good look but we did get a glimpse of them as they ran off into the trees.
A surprising portion of our drive was on gravel roads, some of it packed and some not. We had read about the road conditions in our Milepost Travel Guide book however it was more than I had imagined. We definitely did not go anywhere very fast. So, we just sat back and enjoyed the scenery and I took pictures as we drove. No stopping for photo ops. We had a schedule to keep so we kept moving along.
There was also road construction along the way, which was needed, however it most often caused long waits and the need for guide cars.  Some sections of the road were gravel and occasional potholes for miles so that slowed us down a bit but in spite of all of that we still managed to meet our mileage goals each day.
Stone Mountain Provincial Park in BC was a beautiful stretch.
Lots of curves and then long straight stretches of road. We also had a little rain shower.
Marsh Lake 7:45 pm ~ approximately 560 miles from where we started the day in Fort Nelson.
There were very few cars on the road. Sometimes we would go for miles before seeing a car.
We arrived in Whitehorse at 8:15pm. Our lead cars were in charge of choosing the hotels and our first two were very nice. No complaints from me however Mr. Wonderful teased about the very nice accommodations considering the four kids are students so this time they chose something completely out of character. We were just pulling into town when we received word on directions to the hotel and, oh my, were we surprised when we drove into the parking lot......{to be continued}
Happy TWOsday!
