Part 2 :: Road Trip to Alaska

It is easy to get behind on the blog posts when so much is going on so I am switching gears today  and sharing more pictures of our Alaska adventure
Our caravan road trip to Alaska in June was amazing to say the least. It was several days of long hours of driving but was a ton of fun and definitely not boring. In fact, when traveling in a caravan with adult kids and another parent it is even more fun. And, when it comes to the scenery along the way it is hard to describe how breath taking the view was at all times in every direction.
On June 14th we grabbed breakfast at the hotel in Fort Nelson at 7:45am, stopped to get coffees and then hit the road at 8:30am after a quick stop to fill up the truck and two cars with gas. As we were leaving town we passed a digital sign with a WARNING: Bison on Alaska H, however, we did not see any bison until 12:20. By that time it caught us a bit by surprise. We could see a couple of cars ahead slowing down to look at some of them on the side of the road and take pictures however they scared them away before we got close enough to get a good look but we did get a glimpse of them as they ran off into the trees.
A surprising portion of our drive was on gravel roads, some of it packed and some not. We had read about the road conditions in our Milepost Travel Guide book however it was more than I had imagined. We definitely did not go anywhere very fast. So, we just sat back and enjoyed the scenery and I took pictures as we drove. No stopping for photo ops. We had a schedule to keep so we kept moving along.
There was also road construction along the way, which was needed, however it most often caused long waits and the need for guide cars.  Some sections of the road were gravel and occasional potholes for miles so that slowed us down a bit but in spite of all of that we still managed to meet our mileage goals each day.
Stone Mountain Provincial Park in BC was a beautiful stretch.
Lots of curves and then long straight stretches of road. We also had a little rain shower.
Marsh Lake 7:45 pm ~ approximately 560 miles from where we started the day in Fort Nelson.
There were very few cars on the road. Sometimes we would go for miles before seeing a car.
We arrived in Whitehorse at 8:15pm. Our lead cars were in charge of choosing the hotels and our first two were very nice. No complaints from me however Mr. Wonderful teased about the very nice accommodations considering the four kids are students so this time they chose something completely out of character. We were just pulling into town when we received word on directions to the hotel and, oh my, were we surprised when we drove into the parking lot......{to be continued}
Happy TWOsday!
