This part of our Home Improvement Project was a little tricky for first timers, like us, as we had never installed a staircase handrail or balusters before and only had 4 hands for 29 newel posts. The hubs also had to drill 58 holes that matched the length and angle perfectly!
Accurate measuring was key as well as labeling and our number system.
At least that is what worked for us.
There was no turning back once we started...We put all the balusters in bottom first. Next he brought up the first prepared rail and we worked together from opposite ends to get each baluster in the correct hole in the top of each stair. Once that was finished he brought up the next rail, and repeated the same system. We worked from opposite ends and worked as quickly as possible, before the glue in the holes dried. We also needed to be aware of any possible drips and be sure those were wiped clean. And I am happy to say.....
...WE DID IT!
NEXT: Finishing the return ends.
One for each stair, of course.
Last but not Least....
The Newel Post Caps!
hmmm...but which way do they go??
Well...we guessed wrong! BUMMER.
We had originally bought two different styles and then attached the one we liked. There were no instructions or pictures for installation so we just had to guess. It was not until weeks later we realized we had made a little but very noticeable mistake.
Once the rails were finished we were eager to complete the staircase. The hubs finally got back to the store to exchange the cap that did not match for the matching cap. While he was in the store looking around he noticed the display of the one we had chosen and immediately realized ...we had installed it upside down!!
So, needless to say we ended up buying three total as the other one would be ruined once it was removed. It still needs to be stained and finished but it is a perfect match now! The only thing left to do is to attach the small plugs in the screw holes in the newel posts.
Happy Friday!
