---------- DIY Home Update Project 2024 ----------

OUR ERA's TOUR!
BUH~BYE 1980's/HELLO 2024
The past year has been full of change which comes in all forms, shapes and sizes. Some changes are planned and others are unexpected. Sometimes the unexpected helps to nudge us to get going on a plan, as did the weather earlier this year.
Experience has taught us that one project usually snowballs into many and that was certainly the case with this one. And, speaking of snowballs…this current home improvement adventure all started while we were stuck at home during a snow & ice-storm this last winter.
January 16, 2024
In January, Oregon experienced a snow and ice event that lasted about a week. Blizzard conditions along the Cascades and I84 as well as snow, freezing rain and wind in Portland and much of Oregon.
Needless to say, we eventually lost power and could not get out and about for days.
After being cooped up for several days the hubs was getting restless, even after attempting to sled on the ice in the dark. He wanted to test the roads himself so he took a drive to see what the conditions were like outside of our neighborhood.
January 13, 2024
Come to find out, trees and power lines were down all around us as well as around the city and suburbs. It appeared we would be home bound for a while longer.
January 18, 2024
So, to keep busy, he started in on a DIY home update project.
Go Big or Go Home he always says!
We had been making a priority list for years of things we wanted to update and just happened to have some of the supplies on hand. Enough, at least, for him to get started and that was all it took.
Paneling was the first thing he made, beginning with the upstairs.
January 16, 2024
Next, he removed the upstairs railing, which we had talked about replacing for quite some time. There was NO looking back! We were now committed, all in and beyond the point of no return!
Once he had the upper rail out he put up a temporary safety rail.
January 16, 2024
Soon after that he had installed a new half wall and wired it for an outlet, light switch and lights. No more extension cords running up and down the hall and stairs at Christmas time to light up garlands and decorations.

And PRIVACY! Finally, after all these years, the hall and bedrooms are not so exposed and we now have some personal space.
So, Mr. Wonderful worked as much as he could {when there was power} on the new home improvement project while we waited for the ice to melt.
He also extended the wiring down the stairs for stair lights.
That is not something I would have ever thought of but loved the idea when he told me.
February 2, 2024
The original light fixture will be replaced soon, which we are looking forward to. We are definitely ready for something new after all these years.
February 3, 2024
Another big project was moving the floor vent to the wall. Years ago the hall/wall/house ended just past the floor vent so the only place it could go was in the floor. That was until Mr. Wonderful added an office, sewing/craft room and attic onto our house and enlarged our family room.
The vent did not get moved at that time because there were so many new rooms to finish upstairs as well as an enlarged kitchen area and bigger familyroom downstairs.
Just as now, it was basically a one man crew and the vent location was not a priority.
So, now was the perfect time. The vent is finally in the wall where it should be and we love it. More on that and progress on our current Home Update coming soon.

Happy Sunny Saturday!

Home Improvement 2024 ERAS Tour :: A Quick Look Back

Before moving on with our current DIY Home Improvement Project it occurred to me that it would be fun to share a little history of a few of our earlier projects. So early in fact, that computers and social media were just coming on the scene so printed photos were still the “go to” for saving memories at that time. Over the years the hubs has made significant changes and improvements to our “ 1980’s” home and landscaping.
Our house was built next to an orchard and did not have landscaping on the sides of the house or the backyard. So, the hubs took care of that.
He had a vision. He borrowed some equipment from a farmer he had worked for in high school, college and early marriage and before I knew it….
…he had it ready for landscaping by spring.
Eventually he would build a deck with a trellis and covered it with grapes and years later he built a covered patio with a pallet board bar with seating. The one thing in common with all of our home improvement projects is he does it all. He thinks of it, designs it and then builds it.
As our family grew he decided to build an addition on our house. The original house had 5 bedrooms, one of which we used as an office - on one side for him/sewing room - on the other side for me. It was tight quarters however we made it work.
In 2002 the hubs designed a new addition for the house. He drew up the plans himself, got all the approvals and then dug right in….literally!
It was a definitely a family project as we all chipped in when we could. Friends and family also helped when needed which was so nice but most of the work was done by Mr. Wonderful.
We did have to rent a machine or two. The hubs knew how to operate them so he kept things moving along.
The kids loved to watch and occasionally got to ride along. The older boys were taught how to operate the machines and helped with some digging.
We helped with the framing too when needed.
This was just a fun, quick look at a few of the major projects that have led up to our current Home Improvement Project. Coming up soon…. our new Entry Light Fixture!

Happy Tuesday!

PAINTING THE ENTRY … Walls & Ceiling

Our Home Update Project 2024 moves to the ENTRY.
If you are just tuning in we have been updating our 1980's home.
Out with the OLD and in with the NEW.
However, before we can replace our old 1980's light fixture we must paint our
VAULTED Ceiling Entryway.
Did I mention this is a DIY Project?!
The hubs had just finished installing the new stairs, rails and balusters, as well as DIY paneling. New carpet had been installed also so before we started we needed to cover it all in paper and plastic. DONE!
To be honest, I was not much help on this next phase. Actually, I have not contributed much muscle power to any of it however I try to pitch in whenever or however I can. My role is more about choosing the paint colors, carpet, stair components, fixtures, etc. Other than that, this is basically a one man show!
We decided ladders were just not going to work for what this phase entailed which was painting the high walls, the ceiling and hanging a new light fixture. So, the hubs rented scaffolding. We needed three sections to get close to the ceiling and even then he needed a step ladder and/or an extended roller. Each piece of the scaffolding was very heavy. My main job was to keep each section steady as he lifted them up and even that was difficult.
I am not sure I was even keeping them steady...
{ actually I am SURE I was NOT }
...but he assured me I was. What a great Coach!
The third section was too tall for me so I got out of the way and he constructed the rest
{all of it} by himself. Give credit where credit is due and he definitely deserves all the credit.

DONE!!
Whew... he finished the job with no injuries!
But wait ....
before he disassembles the scaffolding he needs to take down our
old 1980's light fixture
and hang the NEW ONE. Stay tuned!

Happy Saturday !

DIY Stair Treads

Measure, Cut, Adjust, Finish, Install, Repeat
Our current DIY Home Update continues with our focus now on stairs.
Out with the old and in with the new!
May 17
June 10
Mr. Wonderful had to cut the treads to fit the stairs so he made templates to get the angles accurate and try to avoid mistakes that can waste time and money.
June 14
He also needed to place the newel posts which required a hole in two of the treads. Careful measurements were key.
June 14
All the old balisters were removed at this point to make way for the new ones.
June 14
The finished treads were placed in order along the wall.
June 14
Old treads were removed.
June 15
The new treads are installed and attached to the risers. Adjustments are made as needed.
June 16
To install the Newel Post a hole was carefully cut in two of the new treads. Once it was just the right height and snug in the hole it was screwed into the stair stringers.
June 16
Once the newel posts were secure the remaining stair treads were installed.
June 17
June 17
It looked great and the plan was coming together. In fact, we were so excited we could hardly wait to get the hand rail installed however there was still quite a bit to do before the carpet arrived so we put the temporary one back up to keep the workers safe.
June 17
On June 18 the two of us moved all of the upstairs furniture to the hubs Office, my Sewing/Craft Room and our Master Bathroom. We were exhausted however we completed the task. The next morning we moved the bed just before the crew arrived. We love when a plan comes together!

June 19 ~ Carpet Installation!
